A Modern Tale

How do we turn restrictions into opportunities?  For this listed building in the centre of Utrecht (NL), it meant embracing the authentic dark wood ornaments and panelling. “I started simply by spending time inside the rooms. When you can quiet the noise, you notice which elements merely pose a distraction.” Dark wood elements became the protagonists of a strikingly modern narrative that articulates crisp colours and consistency. See-throughs, peek holes, and freestanding elements lend the understated decor a playful spirit.

Pairing the 19th-century dark wood panelling with a fearless use of vivid natural stone and a toned-down colour palette opens up an entirely new conversation on contemporary living.

“It always starts with understanding a place, something intuitively connected to a raison d'etre. Big or small, every design gesture needs a reason to be there"
